Thinking of Grant abandoning her inevitably led her to think of Lawrence’s abandonment. How quickly her life had changed. In some ways, the sudden shock had been the worst part. Though of course, the grinding poverty hadn’t been any fun either. She suddenly realized that the same thing could happen to Mary if Delia were to die suddenly. The girl had no protectors, no friends and no family. Delia decided she had to make her will right away.

Serendipity must have heard her thoughts because Lawyer Johnson soon stuck his head in the room to make sure she had everything she required. She asked if his testimony was over and when he admitted he was at leisure, she asked him to draw up her will.

He seemed surprised, but agreed that life was uncertain for everyone and it was best to be prepared for the worst.

He prepped his pens, paper and ink and asked if Delia had a main beneficiary in mind.

“Yes, my first husband’s niece, Mary Pound.”

“How old is your niece now?”

“Sixteen.”

Lawyer Johnson nodded and made a note. “You will, of course, want to assign a trustee to your estate. At least until she marries.”

“Or she comes of age.”

“Few women manage their own estate at any age.” He caught a look at Delia’s scowl. Delia, of course, had no restrictions on her management of Crow’s Landing, even if she did work through a steward. Lawyer Johnson realized his mistake. “But that choice is yours. She will need a trustee at least until she comes of age, if nothing else to protect her from rogues and fortune hunters. What name may I write down?”

Delia had to think. The problem was she didn’t really know anyone trustworthy. Lawrence’s friends had all proven themselves fickle. Robbie, while sweet, was practically still a child himself. Sir Grantham was… complicated. He had manipulated matters to so she would inherit Crow’s Landing, but he had done it for his own advantage. And the manipulations seemed to be ongoing. Faced with a similar situation where Mary’s best interests were not his, would he act the same way? She just could not be sure. He was such a set of contradictions.

That left only one person of her acquaintance. “Mr. Augustine Wiles.”

The lawyer nearly choked on his tongue. “Mr. Augustine Wiles? Mr. Augustine? Ma’am, are you sure? You don’t perhaps mean some other member of the Wiles family?”

“Are there any?”

“Er… other than Mrs. Grantham, no. Not that I know of.” His voice dropped, but Delia had excellent hearing. “I had just hoped…”

Delia couldn’t blame him for his surprise. Augustine did come off like a silly fop, a tawdry ornament with nothing to do but decorate society, but he had traveled seventy miles from his natural habitat in London purely out of a sense of obligation to see Crow’s Landing was in good hands. His inability to attend his cousin’s funeral spoke to a refined sensitivity. He would make sure Crow’s Landing and thus Mary were well taken care of.

Delia restated her choice and Lawyer Johnson completed the will to her specifications.
